Stop registering Cavalier puppies unless their parents are health tested

Margaret C

Well-known member
I have started a petition, addressed to the UK Kennel Club, asking them to stop registering Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppies unless their parents are MRI scanned and Heart tested.

As so many top breeding cavaliers all over the World originate in the UK there may be overseas owners of cavaliers suffering from SM and MVD that want to add their signature.

If you agree with the petition, please sign and share.

Over 400 people have now signed. Each of those signatures will generate an email that is sent to the Kennel Club.

Please continue to sign and share with friends and family.

Over 1,000 signatures but no response yet from the Kennel Club. I wonder if they really intend to ignore so many emails from concerned dog owners.

Thank you so much to everyone that signed.

I signed the petition, but I have a different opinion on this.

In my opinion a Kennel Club work is to register pure breed dogs being them effected with diseases or not.

On the other hand I do agree that something needs to be done.
An idea I would put is that on the pure breed certificate I would suggest a voting or a color code, which implies if the dog in question is tested or not.
For example a red means no health testing screening is done, yellow would mean a couple have been done, green more, and blue means all.
An adjacent certificate would give details on what is checked and what is not and when.
This would need to be adjusted every year or so. This can be also made in a 1-10 vote.

My understanding is that the results of the official Kennel Club/British Veterinary Association tests (for SM and eyes) are already put on the dog's registration certificate. But they don't have to be done, ie they are not mandatory. And the MRI scheme costs an extra £100, over and above the cost of the scan, which puts some people off. I would like SM amd MVD to be not just mandatory to be done, but mandatory to reveal the results. It's easy to say 'I have my dogs heart checked every year' - but unless you know the result it's pretty useless information - the dog could have anything from clear to heart failure, but he's still fulfilled the mandatory requirement!

Agreed. 100£ is cheap for you. I spent the same last time Holly had a bad stomach couple months ago. For MRI scans I was quoted 1500 EUROS over here in Malta.
I am trying to gather owners interested to see if we can get a cheaper rate, before actually checking Holly in England.
So far she is showing no symptoms of SM, but I still would like to check her out if it happens to find it at a reasonable price.

Thank you so much. I think it did help.
We now have over 2,000 signatures and the number appears to be slowly but steadily climbing.

The petition signatures have been steadily climbing, we now have 3,250, and a young Media Studies student has offered to make a short YouTube film to help spread awareness of the mandatory testing campaign.

If anyone has any video or mobile phone footage of CMSM or MVD symptoms that you would be willing to let us use, I would be very grateful. Just message me or email: [email protected]

Many thanks,
