How Much Does an MRI Cost?

I was told approximately 3 years ago, that an MRI cost 1900, USD. How much does one cost in Ireland and/or England?

I can't speak for Ireland/England, but I spent $2700 USD when Lucky got his MRI last year. I imagine they are probably less expensive in some areas of the country but that's the going rate in the NYC metro area.

Thank you, Lani. That sounds like a very good reason for having pet insurance. I had a PetPlan policy for Charlie McFarlie for many years, but only used it a couple of times.

Definitely! I spent nearly $10k on Lucky last year between his heart issues, MRI, myringotomy, eye specialists. Poor thing was healthy most of his life but we made our money back in the end. I'd have preferred he live a long healthy life and never having to file a claim on the insurance. Funny thing is that right before his eye issues (caused by his PSOM) started, I thought about canceling the insurance because it had gotten so expensive. I'm so glad I didn't.

I think with a breed like Cavaliers, with so many inherited and commonly found diseases (MVD, CM/SM, pancreatitis, luxating patellas, PSOM, epilepsy, deafness, dry eye, myoclonus etc - and degenerative myelopathy has recently been added to the list), that insurance is essential. Or, as some people do, putting the equivalent amount away in a bank account every month. If you insure, make sure you get a lifetime policy.

In the UK a mini MRI scan (just head and neck, but enough for a diagnosis) costs around £250. A full scan is a round £1500 - £2000.

Our very special dogs don't come cheap!

Kate,

if I am doing my conversion properly, that means that the basic U.K. MRI would be approximately 365 USD, which would be a fantastic deal here in the U.S.
As it is, the lowest U.S. rate mentioned here is 1700 USD, which is approximately 1163 pounds. All said, a basic MRI in the U.S. costs over 3 times more than in the U.K.?
It’s no wonder that few U.S. breeders do MRI health screening with their Dams and Sires. When you add up costs for the other screenings- heart, eyes, patella, hips etc., we’re talking a large expenditure. It's very sad. I hope the day comes soon when a low cost test is available to diagnose Syringomyelia.
