Boys and Girls

Normally not. However, I have frequently been told that Shelby looks like a girl.

Maybe the pink bandanas have something to do with it!!

Oh, I think you can definitely tell usually - especially if the males are allowed to mature naturally until they're 1.5 to 2 years old before neutering. Then they get nice big heads vs the girls who have smaller, more petite and feminine heads.

I neutered Quinlan at 10 months against the suggestion of his breeder to wait longer. I didn't realize how much the heads of males changed as they aged, so with my next male cav I will probably wait longer, though I think Quin's little petite head is cute. People ALWAYS think he is a girl, and I don't know if it's because of his petite head or just because he's kind of a fluffy cute dog and people just assume that dogs of his type will be girls. A couple weeks ago a woman stopped me while walking him and said to me, "Oh my gosh, look at that beautiful little feminine dog! She looks like a little princess that should be carried around on pink silk pillows! How adorable!"....I didn't have the heart to point out that he was a boy. My poor little boy. I really wanted to get him a cute rhinestone collar or something, but my boyfriend said that since people already think that he is a girl, it will only confuse them more!

Girls or Boys

For the most part, I think you can tell. People seem to know Abbey is a girl, she's never been called a boy...yet anyway!! :)
Sorry the photo is so big, I'm having trouble re-sizing it.

I think Rory's mom is right as far as size. Jake is such a bruiser compared to Shelby that I think people automatically assume that she must be a female!! Although I surely can't say she is petite!! :?

Actually I think these are dogs that have quite puppyish faces anyway and to most people unfamiliar with the breed, they all look like girls. Nearly everyone guesses that mine are both girls except people really familiar with cavaliers. A breeder has said that it takes up to three-four years before male heads start to look more male as well, so maybe that's partly it as mine are both under 2 still.

I know a male ruby show dog and to me, his head isn't much different from Jaspar and Leo's (he's intact of course). Some males get a very jowly look but others don't seem to.

Oh - non-Cav people always think Rory is a girl. and people say it's because he's a small, fluffy dog. They just think "girly". And he does have a rather large, masculine head.

But, I was speaking more of Cav owners who can see the difference. Especially if you have more than 1 side-by-side.

Shelby and Abbey both look like gorgeous girlies :) I think my Maxxy looks like a boy but I can't find out how to post a piccie on here grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Girls are usually daintier than the boys. Most of the boys I've met are 'bruisers' and typical boys whereas the girlies are more inclined to just want to be pampered LOL

Have a look here Donna re posting photos, but if you're still stuck, please PM me and I'll try to help

I think most people with an interest in Cavaliers can tell boys from girls, once they're over about a year, especially seeing them in person - it can be harder from a photo though.

Rupert and TedBear definitely have "male" heads, although non-Cavalier people have accused Rupert of being a girl - i think you're right, they just assume that small, cute, fluffy dogs are female :x

Shelby and Abbey are just beautiful, and vey obviously female - I think my Peaches has very feminine features too

NickiPeaches120505-29-501499.jpg

and she is usually recognised as a girlie!!

Thanks Nicki will look there and try and fathom it! I think I'm going to have to go to photobucket too as imageshack won't load :(

Your little Peaches is so beautiful and yes she does look like a little girl. if ever you get fed up of her send her to me I have a thing about Tri's 8)

I agree about Teddy Edward he definitely looks like a boy. my youngest saw his pic on the doggy pages last night and thought he was delicious :)

Thank you for the kind words about TedBear and Peaches - she's packing right now

Bless her we love her to bits, but she is a bit of a nightmare. She has hip dysplasia; luxating patellas {she had surgery for one earlier this year, and may need the other doing too; bascially her back end is a disaster  }; MVD {which is slowly progressing} and dry eye. In addition to her physical problems, she has some big behavioural issues - she's terrified of other dogs, and launches herself at them barking, to make them go away - she's never bitten, and I know she wouldn't, she just looks and sounds pretty scary.

She has been to a trainer, and was doing brilliantly, until some stupid women let their large Labrador and Jack Russell bounce all over her when she was on the lead on the beach. Hubby had to forcefully remove the JRT. Peaches was terrified, and has never been the same since. Although she did make friends with my sister's small Lab, and the two of them went off hunting and quartering together!!

She has some doggie friends locally, and is usually ok with Cavaliers, as she's always lived with them.

She was bred by a friend of mine; sold as a pup and returned at 8 months, hadn't been socialised and then lived with 12 others until she was given to us as a Wedding Present at the age of almost 3. I had known her for some time, and always loved her {at that point her health problems weren't known}.

TedBear has been with us almost 2 months, he's a retired show dog and will be 2 in September. He's an absolute love, a real cuddle monster, and is settling well.

Ugh JRT's I am sorry if anyone on here has one but I detest the beasts. I had a gorgeous GSD who we sadly had to PTS at 5 yrs old. She was a wonderful girl in every respect and very protective of both myself and the kids. I was pregnant with my youngest (he's now 14) and was walking her on a lead round the local dog field. Suddenly 3 JRT's came hurtling at her and attacked her  I was doing everything I could to get them away from her and all she was interested in was standing in front of me to protect me. She had all her tail ripped open by the satanic little beasts.

We've also had a few run ins with JRT's on walks with maxx too - they just seem to want to attack anything that moves

I just crack up at Peaches!! She has such attitude (and I mean that in the most wonderful way!) She seems to be say "look if you must". Her markings are just beautiful.

ERRRRR... Jack Russells!! Can't stand 'em. Jake's first run in with a dog at the dog park was with two of them, Hansel and Gretel. Awful, hateful little things. The owner kept insisting it was my fault and telling me to put my dog down. He** no!!! Jake was about 8 pounds at the time and these two were all over him. She has not been seen at the park for ages, probably since the last time she showed up drunk  !!

If I see a cavalier in the street, I can normally always tell if they're male or female...

Bailey is the first male cavalier i've ever had and even though he looks quite girly in pictures, if you see him up close you can definately tell hes a boy (that is without looking underneath him...lol)

Girls seem to have prettier faces.... guess its just like humans really ;o)
