1st time foster

I'm nervous and excited all at the same time!! Our club has 3 cavaliers coming into rescue in the next couple of weeks and I'm going to foster one starting tomorrow! This guy is a little (12 lb) approx 4 year old blenheim that was found as a stray and turned into a kennel. Our rescue person is going to pick him up tomorrow and deliver him right to my groomer (Lil Miss Priss) for clean up. I'll meet them there and bring him home. He's a cutie. I've gone and bought a crate and am anxiously awaiting his arrival.

Jake and Shelby are just great with other cavaliers. Neither had any problem letting Shiloh and Rory into their domain and sharing their stuff, so we'll see how things go.

Hubby and I have talked about getting a third and both agreed we don't want to start out with a puppy again. We'll foster this guy and see how things go.

Keep your fingers crossed that everything goes okay! Any advice from any of you pros out there??!! (Karlin, I specifically had you in mind when I agreed to do this!)

OMG!!!! How exciting!! Three fosters in the San Diego area?? Wow. I can't wait to hear how things turn out! Does he have a name or do you get to name him? I'm guessing he didn't come w/ a name if he was a stray...

I have a classmate who really really wants a rescue Cav. She's down the LA area for the summer. Maybe one of these 3 would be a good match? Is there someone I can put her in contact with? She just had back surgery Friday, so I guess she needs to recover first, but then she said she wanted a dog after that. :D

I'm so excited for you! :D :D :D Maybe next time we come visit you'll have THREE playmates for Shiloh and Rory?!

You never know!!!

What has inspired me is how well Shelby and Jake got along with Rory and especially with Shiloh (different breed but so very gentle). I figured if they accepted two dogs into their territory with no problem I shouln't have too many problems with a foster.

Let's just hope I don't fall in love and decide to keep him

Here is the link for contacts in the San Diego club http://www.cavalierclubofsandiego.com/bod.htm

I am dealing with Joy Smith. She is currently heading up the rescue position until someone assumes it full time.

Can you believe 3 in the San Diego area?! Unheard of!

There is a black and tan male coming from a divorce and the owner has to go back to work full time and doesn't feel she can take care of the dog. There is a ruby male (?) coming in from a shelter, found as a stray and then this little guy.

I can see you keeping him icon_whistling

icon_crssedfingers that things work out for the best.

Post pictures of him soon.

Yup, I can see you keeping him too - especially if Jake and Shelby make friends with him. You'll feel too guilty to separate them again and that'll be it

Oh now I see the details about the divorce! This is what happens when I read the second thread first! icon_slapper

I can see a b&t sneaking in....

Actually I noted some US rescue people on one of the cav email lists in Yahoo said a lot more cavaliers are coming into rescue -- many have health or behaviour problems. That is typical anyway for rescues, they usually have been surrendered for a reason and rarely is it what we might think of as 'a good one' if we are people who take the time to train, socialise and vet check our animals -- or if we make a commitment to an animal regardless of health. I think this is a sign both that cavaliers are getting more common in the US, and that more and more are coming from puppy farms to fill the demand gap, hence sometimes the problems.

We don't have a lot come up here for rehoming but there are a steady number. Right now the two at LAW (one of which I will probably home to... ME!) and also a 2 yr old blenheim male needing rehoming. About three others have been up for rehoming in the last 6 weeks. The lowish number sin rescue are a tribute to the personality of cavaliers; most people can find homes for them without them going to rescue I believe.

Yep, two years ago I think you would have to search high and low to find one in rescue. This is what happens when a breed becomes popular and everyone wants one without researching. A sad commentary!

Sounds like the same story as here Cathy :?

When we got Maxx 6 years ago it had taken me 18mths of searching to even find any Cavalier puppies. I'd also had my name down on rescue lists and at dogs homes within a 150 mile radius for one.

Now there are loads of Cavaliers and more in rescues than I have ever known.

It is so sad, they are such wonderful loving dogs & it really worries me for the breed. I honestly attribute lots of the health problems to the popularity (over and interbreeding and the like). It is such a crime when people turn the breeds popularity to their own advantage and start using their dogs as money making machines.

The lady who honoured & enriched our lives with Maxx had 17 Cavaliers. Most of these had either been bred by herself or her sister over a long period of time. Some of her bitches she would never let have a litter and others a maximum or one or two in their lifetime. She'd also only ever let them have a litter once they were past three or four & all of her Cavaliers are completely health screened before she ever let them mate. All puppies are health screened before she lets them go too. It is so lovely to find someone who genuinely loves their furbabies as much as we do and certainly doesn't do it for the money. In fact, she only ever has a litter when she feels the need to add to her tribe LOLOL
