first walk on lead?

Not until after its vaccinations are completed. How old will your pup be when you get him/her? Lots of breeders won't let their pups go until after their first jab anyway.

We used to put Maxx's lead on him in the house and walk him from room to room and round the garden just to get him used to it. We've never really had a problem with him on the lead either :D

Definately not till she has had the vaccinations. When our puppies leave at 3 months, they have had their first round, but are not yet old enough for the second round or the rabies. I know it's really tempting to take the little girl out to show her off, but resist!

As soon as she is home, get a collar on her and start working with her during the potty outings in your yard and even in the house. It's been my experience that the puppies hate the leash and collar at first.

Good luck with your new puppy!

thanks a lot for the advice, its very helpful, and in answer to your question my pup will be 6 wks old when i get it home in another 4 weeks and it will be vaccinated, but when are the next vaccinations due after that, and how often?

When you get your puppy, ask the breeder what shots she has had and when. Then go immediately to your vet for a checkup, even if the breeder has already done so, and have a checkup done by him/her. Your vet will be able to tell you what she needs and when. The rabies is usually done at 16 to 18 weeks, but again, ask your vet.

Good luck and have lots of fun with your new puppy!

6 weeks sounds very young for the pup to be leaving her Mum - the Cavalier clubs recommend 8 weeks at the earliest.

Cavalier pups tend to still be very immature at that stage, I'd want to make sure she was properly weaned and feeding well at the very least.

Hope it all works out ok for you - looking forward to hearing more about your pup, and please feel free to ask questions.

I agree, 6 weeks is VERY young for a Cavalier puppy to be taken home. I didn't get Maxx until he was almost 15 weeks, even though I'd seen him at and been visiting him since he was about 2 1/2 weeks.

Just make sure like Nicki says that the pup is properly weaned and feeding well & if I were you my first port of call would be the Vet's surgery just to make doubly sure that she is completely healthy.

I didn't think most Cavaliers were actually taken away from their Mum and socialised amongst each other until they were at least 6 weeks old but I might be wrong here.....

BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE where are you????? I'm sure you'll be able to tell us the answer on this one!

I'm baaaack! Sorry been trying to figure out how to post pictures.

Yes, what everyone else said! 6 weeks is way too young in my opinion; got so involved in the vacination and leash stuff I overlooked the obvious. At 6 weeks we are just beginning to think about starting our puppies on solid food, usually closer to seven weeks. We start the puppies on a small amount of puppy food soaked in water or a canned product called GME to soften it.

I sure would try to get your breeder to keep her longer; heck, they're still nursing on Mom at that age. I know some other breeds let puppies go at 6 weeks, but Cavaliers develop slower than a lot of other breeds. Personally, we wait til our puppies are 11 to 12 weeks old before they go to their new homes. They are more mature, they are BEGINNING to get to concept of house training by going out with our adults, and they are learning to be a dog. We get a lot of pressure to let them go earlier, but we stand firm.

Good luck with your new girl.

This is indeed a very serious issue. Releasing a pup at 6 weeks is against the Northern Irish CKCS club and UK club code of ethics which all breeders in the club must abide by -- the minimum age is 8 weeks:

Not part with a puppy under the age of eight weeks to a new owner.

From http://www.thecavalierclub.co.uk/club/Ethform.html

A breeder could be censured and not allowed to register pups younger than that. Is this a registered club breeder in the North? If I were you, I wouldn't even consider a pup from anyone not in the club and recommended by the club secretary because of the unfortunate potential for very costly health issues and other heartaches from indiscriminate breeding. This is a breed with very serious health problems and their appearance, and a consequent very short lifespan of perhaps only 6-7 years, typically come along with puppies from breeders who don;t breed for health and aren't involved in the club and showing their dogs. Someone releasing pups this early should be reported if they are a breed club member.

Separate from health issues, at 6 weeks pups need more time with siblings and their mother still, to learn appropriate behaviour. Homing a puppy so young is risking some serious behavioural problems. Two weeks is a huge amount of time in a puppy's life; a six week old is so tiny and barely developed. For puppies this is like the difference between a 6 month and a one year old child as they develop so fast.

I can give you the number of the CKCS club secretary in Northern Ireland if you need it.

You can get the names of the NI puppy register coordinators on this page and you could also ask them about this breeder:

http://www.thecavalierclub.co.uk/puppy/regpup.html

If you are sure you want this puppy I would insist the breeder keep it til it is 8 weeks of age as this extra time is so important.

thanks a lot for your information everyone, its been extremely helpful, and i will make sure that i dont get my pup until its a least 8 weeks old, i thought he said 6 weeks but maybe i was mistaken , i will get in touch with him again,i am not sure if the breeder is registered or not, but he was recommended to me by people who have bought from him over the years , and his dogs are beautiful and very healthy and well cared for,but i dont care how long i have to wait on my puppy, it will be worth it[/b]

That's great; I'm glad you double-checked!! :D the health issues are so important for the breed so going with a good breeder is even more important that it always is... Maybe what he said was that you could pick her up IN 6 weeks as I think you were there when she was 2 weeks? And then you confused it with AT 6 weeks... :)

The important question now is: how much longer is left at this point? As we will be waiting for some puppy pics. Did you take any when you went to pick her out? I took this pic of Jaspar at 3.5 weeks and it is fun now to be able to look at him when he was so tiny:

yep karlin ur right when u said that i mistake him for saying that i can get her home in 6 ks(shes 2 wks already), i assumed he meant shw would b 6 weeks old.(doh).lol.. and i adore your pics they are just tooooooooooo cute, why i have waited so long to get one of these beautiful dogs is a mystery to me, i am going around petshops looking at dog things like an excited new mum lol. and no i didnt take any pics when i went out to see my new pup, i had my mobile with me and could of used that but me and my mum were just too busy admiring the pups and playing with the rest of the family that i just completely forgot...... but when i get my little girl i will definitely have my camera clicking non stop, and i will show off my proud pictures in here, i love looking at the pics of all your dogs, they are gorgeous and it makes me feel lovely and love inside reading all the posts and i can see from your posts that you all love your dogs very much, they are such characters.
i will go now because i get to get back to surfing on the net to try and find a name for my little baby ..cyaaaaaaa xo

They are indeed the cutest little things when they're young. I have heard the hamster analogy before, too. I assume you have seen pictures when they're just a few days old when the noses are pink? If not, let me know and I can find some pictures of one of our past litters to post.

Getting really excited about upcoming litters; I need my "puppy fix"!!

makes me feel lovely and love inside
that is meant to read makes me feel lovely and warm inside, you see i am so excited about getting this little pup, that i cant even type any more lol

Bruce, any advice on how to deal with the wee messages these 7 pups are leaving all over my floor, can yo try to make them poop in one place at this age or even in anohter week, when they will be more steady on thier feet.

i bottle fed one last night god he nearly ate the bottle!!!! but i noticed he needed to wee, so i called Mom, she came over and obliged and he also obliged, he ate more and then went to sleep, then when i put him back to his home he pooped on his sister, im afraid to wash the pups incase she doesnt like it as she is really fussy on smells adn cant stand even air freshner!

when i sprat her with bitch spray she goes mental, not to mention if she is bathed! so im worried about cleaning her pups.

If anyone finds a way to get puppies to go in one spot, I am willing to pay almost anything for the answer  Seriously, I have yet to find anything that works. When our pups are about 4 weeks old, we set up an x-pen on a piece of sheet vinyl and put a crate inside for their bedding. The pen helps contain the little "gifts" to a smaller area. We have had some very limited success with pee pads, but its still a mess. Just one of the messy parts of breeding. To clean up messes when the puppies are old enough to be running around the house, we keep several rolls of paper towels placed all over. If we're really quick, we can occasionally get a towel under a squatting pup before the poop hits the floor!

As far as cleaning pups, we don't often use shampoo, especially when they're younger. Just wet a paper towel with warm water and use that; you may need to hold it on hardened poop for a minute to soften it, but it works. Keep an eye on the puppies anus, as poop will sometimes tend to build up there and stick to the fur, making it very painful for puppy to poop.

Hope this helps. I wish you continued good luck with your puppies.

LOL thanks for that, but with 3 kids 2 dogs and a man about the house i have enough to be cleaning up after not to mention the 7 puppies!!!!!!!

lucky they are so sweet!!!!

last year ii had paper down but the pups did it everywhere EXCEPT on the paper.

might warm the house tonight and [more then usual that is] and wash them all in water. thier bedding is now washed daily as i dont think it fair poor old Mom has to keep eating thier waste, if its thier waste it cannot be good for her.

she still seems to suffer a bit from reflux, i thought this would stop when pups were born but not so far, she can be sitting still then suddenly sit up and like swallow and swallow like she is choking for a few seconds, seems to last longer though.

have to say i am going to have a serious talk with my vet tomorrow, but i feel maybe its time to stop trying with MAx, i feel dreadfull about this but the vet has no clue what is wrong and therefore cannot fix him.... he wants to send me to a specialist, but i cannot take time off work for that as welll as my kids i have no days off anyway and have a child going into hospital soon too.

sorry mixing about 20 threads here into one. appologies.
