heart murmur

Somehow I knew we wouldn't escape...hubby took the pups to the health clinic last Sunday (I was out of town) and Shelby at 2 years old has a grade 1-2 heart murmur. I've just read through the posts on mvd and it sounds encouraging. So many of you have such encouraging stories. We will see Dr. Herndon (major hottie cardiologist ) a week from Tuesday to determine if this is a new murmur or heart disease. I just knew I wouldn't escape this but the stories I've read have been encouraging. We are almost at the 1 year mark from Shelby's knee surgery and Jake cancer and figure we can survive about anything at this point!!

Oh, CAthy... So sorry to hear! But a grade 1 - 2 murmur is mild. I don't have enough experience w/ MVD to give you any advice or encouragement, but know I'm thinking encouraging thoughts for you and Shelby!

The neurologist at UC Davis thought he maybe heard a grade 1 murmur on Rory. No one else can hear it. It's hard to know if they really hear the murmur or if they are just looking for one since he's a Cav... I think I'll take him into the cardiologist here just in case but i'm not too concerned. Especially with the syringomyelia, I've got enough going on to worry about a "maybe" grade 1 murmur.

Anyway - Thinking good thoughts for you!! Let us know how her cardio appt goes.

Many Cavaliers lead long and happy lives with low grade murmurs, so try not to panic.

That news is never easy.

Hopefully it will just remain mild for many years to come. There are great new meds around that can help if it should come to that.

Everything I've been hearing is somewhat encouraging. At least this has been around long enough that we know how to deal with as opposed to SM. That just scares the pants off of me!! Oh well, patella surgery, cancer surgery and now heart issues. Still love them to death!!!

So sorry to hear this Cathy; but you are also right, there are many encouraging stories about this, and so often it never causes any worry at all. And definitely there are many options for care and treatment -- Pat's post in the FAQs is so helpful I think on just the things you can do to maintain top heart health and then, how to proceed if and when necessary to medications etc.

Cathy, I agree with the others. I have a friend who had a gorgeous Tri, Bobby. Bobby had a grade 2-3 murmur and still lived to the wonderful age of 14!!!!!!!!

He had a very regal life and was completely ruined, I wish for the very same for your darling Shelby. Let's hope for good news from the specialist.

You've got a great attitude Cathy, yes you can get through this considering everything you've already dealt with!
It sounds like you have a good vet, you have great resources and you have a ton of support!
