Keep the 'dog' and 'our dog love' out of this

I don't very often lose my temper, but that statement is just beyond belief

The issue is, and always was, about dogs suffering from SM, and it was my love for this breed that made me feel it was necessary to speak out

This person's comment completely discounts the pain that the dogs can suffer from this serious inherited condition & the cost, emotionally & financially, to their owners

For goodness sake, go and read some of the heartbreaking posts on this forum, and then join the rest of the real world, where it is actually thought that people have a responsibility to the living, breathing, feeling, animals they bring into the world & the owners they sell them to

This cold unfeeling attitude, which discounts the importance of these innocent beautiful dogs & their lives of pain, is exactly why the public is regarding so many cavalier breeders with disbelieve & horror

Well if you do exactly that & think of cavaliers as a brand & puppies as a product that is sold to the public it does become much simpler

if a car manufacturer was making cars with faulty brakes the person responsable would be sacked.
if they knew about the fault & carried on making them anyway they ( & those who knew & didnt speak out ) would be in serious trouble ( think of all the food & drug scandals over the years aswell)

But for some reason people put more thought into buying a cd player than breeding or buying a dog.

The big difference between a product & dog of course is that dogs are living feeling creatures.

They dont ask to be born & have no choice in were their lives take them so it is up to us to make sure they are happy both physically & mentally.

I wholeheartedly agree with you Margaret.

Only a cold-hearted person could post something like that.

Couldn't agree more! In fact I think it's a most excellent idea.
Introducing Mri scanning and MVD testing as part of your quality system would reduce the mumber of product fails if you remove them from the product line and do frequent customer follow ups to determine customer satisfaction.
Then of course you meet a kid like I met this afternoon while exercising Her Majesty Miss Dizz.
He was about ten or eleven and he came staright up and asked if he could pick her up, that he had dogs just like her at home . So I said Ok!
I then noticed as she was licking him that he was very tearful so i asked him if he was ok.
His one year old cavalier was run over and killed during the summer, his second cavalier died from heart problems aged 6 and the other one died "when her brain came out of her skull and her back legs crumpled under her".He said the vet told them 40% of cavaliers had that????
I asked if he had seem the TV programme pedigree dogs exposed. He hadn't!
And that is the real cost of sick and damaged dogs, heartbreak for families who had no idea what they were investing in.
Sins

I see your points too. But the dogs are in pain. When you have a cavalier with SM you cannot leave out the dog's pain of the equation.

I should add: the dog's pain is a bigger part of the equation.

That's the most important thing when everything is taken into consideration.I really don't know what I'd do if Daisy was ever diagnosed.
I have no idea how I could deal with seeing her in pain. The welfare of the dog is of paramount importance always. That's an undisputable fact.

I am so thankful for every day I have with my SM girl, Riley (decompression surgery on June 10, 2008 ) and for every part of every day that she seems like her old self - no pain, no vestibular system (or balance) issues. She was almost 6 when she was diagnosed although she was symptomatic when I got her at 11 months. I just didn't know what it was and the breeder only said she has this cute little head tilt and occasionally gets so excited that she's a little off balance. But, I was already in love with her and took her home despite that. Now, I just hope I have prolonged her life and freed her from some nasty symptoms. She truly touches my heart and soul.

In my opinion animal's disease or pain must not be compared to any kind of “product” coming out of order after you bought it.
A suffering creature can by chance be cured or his pains be allayed but it's never a “reparation”. Pain and suffering will never be forgotten by dog and by his family.
Breeder-"dog-buyer" relationship is totally different from manufacturer-consumer-relationship.
You find many instructions explaining to puppy-buyers they are to pick up at least information as they are concerned about buying a new car or cd-player but always will be added they have to accept full responsibility for their dog.
For myself it's not an issue of senses but of our love to dogs and of respect creatures deserve.
A damaged car can be replaced as necessary I don't want to bring to my mind anyone exchanging his suffering or aged dog.

That's really sad, poor boy:(

Exactly ,dogs are living creatures who feel pain. & deserve to be treated with care & respect
But the way things are at the moment more thought is put into creating & buying junk than into creating a living being & that is wrong

I just don't understand these people. I read yesterday that a certain person has 'reduced' her dog numbers from 9 to 5. Reduced?????? I thought that these were supposed to be much loved pets? How can you 'reduce' them so quickly?

I have often wondered about some breeders when I read about rescue dogs who are ex-breeders dogs. I got Toby from a lady who only bred occassionally, was fair obsessive about where her pups went, and who would never have parted with any of her dogs. I knew her quite well and we kept in touch for years until she moved away from the area.

My mum's first Cavalier Rusty, came from a CKCS Breeder who runs a rescue. He seemed a nice enough guy, and told us that Rusty wasn't actually a rescue but one of his ex-breeding dogs. I didn't mind this at all, but when we got her home to the vet he had omitted to mention that she had a grade 4 heart murmur at 5/6 years old (can't remember her exact age when we got her). But by this time, we had all fallen in love with her, so she stayed with us. I suppose I should have contacted him and said something, but at the time I couldn't see the point, as there was no way we were going to return her.

Rusty had three good years with mum and dad. My brothers and I paid for her medication (obviously insurers weren't going to cover an existing condition) and although she wasn't totally well she had regular vet checks and a good quality of life. She died suddenly in her sleep, and although my mum knew it could happen she was devastated.

A lot of rambling, but my point is, these are very loved dogs, and not commodoties to be chucked out after they are useful. How can you possibly take love out of the equation?

I'm going to have to stop writing as I am getting upset about this!

Yes I read that to, where is a dog is for life not just for breeding springs to mind.
Many years ago I had a dog called Merlin a beautiful Black and Tan. The breeder asked to use him at stud which I allowed her to do. One of the puppies born had juvenille catarcts and was nearly blind. I took Merlin to a KC registered eye specialist who could not find any problems with his eyes. Merlin was Never used at stud again despite several breeders asking me and even when I told them about the puppy they still wanted to use him. He was part of our family and remained so until he died.

Just read the piece, Margaret and her cavs looks lovely.
They bussed members from all over to vote:( I didn't realise this, Last Sunday I was hoping for good news and that Margaret would not be voted off, but sounded like she never stood a chance, and a certain chairMAN wanted to punch Margaret, well there you go. THESE PEOPLE.
Margaret you have been so brave, you have my utmost respect, if these people had an ounce of your decency and conscious, this sorry business would'nt be. Hold your head high Margaret, you are a class apart from them.

Wasn't it Shakespeare who said " It is better to keep silent and be thought the fool then speak and remove all doubt'
What an idiotic comment.

Yes I wondered how she had 'reduced' her dogs. I wonder if this is true, if it is then it's very sad indeed.

Margaret, unfortunately, some breeders don't actually care about their dog's offspring, just the money it will bring in :(

I for one am totally appalled at the attitude of Beverly Costello and also (but not surprised) by that of Veronica Hull.

I sincerely hope that the BIS dog never suffers from his SM. I wouldn't wish it on any dog, I've seen too many (including my own) suffer too much already. The heartbreak it brings is unbelievable, as you know from losing your beloved Monty.

Stuff the club and their moronic voters Margaret. You are in the right. Oh and if anyone would like to sue me for my comments on here then please feel free to PM me for the address of my solicitor! :p

I've always thought there is a difference between loving the breed & loving the dogs as individuals.
For some people they love the showing, history ,memorabilia etc & having dogs of that breed around but it doesnt really matter which dogs.

I love my dogs for themselves , I could probably replace them with "prettier" dogs but I would never have that little personality back again.
