Microchipping

Quick question: What age would you consider the earliest age to microchip a Cavalier Puppy? I've always thought 6 to 7 weeks old minimum but have recently heard of someone microchipping at 4 to 5 weeks. Seems a bit early to me...

When I had puppies, my vet said to do it when they were spayed/neutered as the injection could be a small bit painful.

I'm surprised to hear that. In many countries, by law they must be microchipped by 3 or 4 months of age (in case they get lost or stolen I presume). But good to hear the differing opinions

In Ireland now, by law puppies must be chipped before they are homed and the is the responsibility of the breeder. So chipping tends to happen around 6-8 weeks or so. I've not heard of chipping earlier though I don't know that it would matter too much but it seems a lot more difficult to chip a very small puppy than a slightly older one. Four to five weeks seems really young.

It really depends on the size of the puppy! It's very difficult to microchip tiny puppies but obviously in many areas this is now a legal requirement.

That's interesting. I'm in the US and chipping isn't required at all.
