New to the group šŸ˜Š

Hey everyone!
My name is breia, my family has had a King Charles (Bowie) for about a year now. I wanted to join the group because I have some questions and wanted to be able to connect with more experienced King Charles owners, with us being relatively new to this breed of dog. I hope itā€™s okay to ask some of these in an introductory post.

So, Bowie seemed to train up pretty quickly on potty training, sit, kennel, etc. However we have noticed in the last few months he has completely reverted in potty training. At first he would hide and do it, and then he became bold about it and started going right in front of us. To pre-address any questionsā€¦heā€™s been to the vet and is perfectly healthy, no change in environment or food, and I work from home so heā€™s actually being taken outside many, many times a day to walk and play and go potty. We have a routine with going potty and we havenā€™t changed that at all.

Second, he seems endlessly hyperactive. Even more so than other puppies when we go to dog parks and such. He never stops running, jumping, moving, zooming, etc. We cannot for the life of us, no matter how much training we doā€¦get him to stop jumping up on people or even get him to listen to us about anything when anyone not from home is around. Like, at all. All listening and training goes out the window. And believe me, we continue with the same training when someone new is around. Heā€™s so hyperactive his eyes like bug out of his head, like huge wide eyes to the point where people comment on it like ā€œjeez man, your dog is so insane his eyes are bugging out of his eye socketsā€. He wonā€™t lay down and relax unless heā€™s locked in his kennel. Heā€™s been in our house for over a year now and is still constantly sniffing everywhere all the time in fast circles around the house like there is going to be a new smell but there isnā€™t. Even as I type this his eyes are so wide you can see well into the white part of his eyeball and heā€™s zooming around the house repeatedly. There is no one but me here. Heā€™s moving so fast heā€™s slipping and slamming into walls (hardwood floors).
So I guess Iā€™m wondering if anyone knows why heā€™d revert in potty training, and if the extreme, endless hyperactivity is normal?

Thank you!

Welcome to you and Bowie.

At puberty they do seem to forget everything that they ever learned! Fortunately over time it will return, with patience and consistency.

With the toilet training, I would go back to basics. Take him out every hour, reward if he performs. In between confine him to one room or a pen. When he's toileted outside then he can have playtime indoors too.

I think perhaps he might be having too much activity and can't settle. Have you tried doing enrichment activites, especially sniffing type ones with him? That can be mentally tiring making him more likely to settle.

otherwise I would perhaps consider getting a force free trainer involved.
