Another Wallis Update

I'm going to get a big dry erase board to start listing Wallis's problems so that I can keep up with them and their priority more easily.

Our current first priority is that her platelet count is low. This means that she may not be producing enough platelets, she is "using" them up somehow, or that there is some on-going process that is keeping her from producing them.

We may have an internal bleeding problem, causing the low platelet count. We have to be on the lookout for bruising or her skin turning purple. There may be a problem in her bone marrow. The tumor could be releasing toxic chemicals into her system. She could have an immune deficiency problem.

She is doing okay right now, but that could change at any time.

Right now our priority list is to find the reason for the low platelet count. This can be done by a bone marrow biopsy, putting her on steroids to see if it clears up, and/or going ahead with the ultrasound on her heart, spleen, kidneys, etc. The tumor has moved to low on the list.

We can continue to monitor her as she is, since she appears to be doing okay right now. We can be referred to a specialist to have the bone marrow aspirate done, although it may or may not tell us anything, or we can evaluate her heart, etc. (Sorry if I'm repeating myself)

He said he would rather have the ultrasound done before we remove the tumor on her side that we know is cancer.

If we do nothing at this point and the tumor starts to "act up" - grow larger, become ulcerative - then we may need to face the fact that it is time to give up on her.

Yes, this time I have cried like a baby after I talked to him - to the point that Henry (my bird) started crying along with me.

Our plan at this point to leave things as is, take our trip to Chattanooga this weekend, I will be back the next weekend then we will decide what to do. Hopefully nothing will happen while she is staying with someone else or while Bubba is home with her and I'm out of town.

All this has come after I had decided that I was looking at her as a "worst case scenario" and not looking for the positive. She will wag just the end of her tail when I walk past her. She loves her food. She enjoys going outside. I just have to keep in mind quality vs quantity. I won't let her suffer; I love her too much for that. When her time is up we'll know.

I appreciate more than I can say all of the support I've been getting from everyone here. It means so much to me - you've known me for such a short time, but I feel that you have wrapped your arms around me and taken me in. That means a lot, especially now. Yes, I'll joke and laugh and poke fun at you, but I never mean it in a spiteful way because you all are too important.

I think I'll go cry in the shower.

I think we all are feeling this for both of you. You need to go on your trip for a breather, so try and relax (I know it's so hard). Your vet sounds wonderful and very on top of things and with your knowledge hopefully you'll find great solutions to make things better. :xfngr:

Donna....I know know hard this is and Wallis will give you a sign when it's time. I never understood what my Vet. meant we he told me I would know. He said he was not going to tell me the signs becasue I would be starring a Chloe all the time, which I'm grateful for now, but was a little put off by then. I wanted him to tell me it was time, so I wouldn't have to make the decision, but he wouldn't. They do give you a sign, one way or the other. Just enjoy every minute you have with her now, as I know you are. We are here for you! :flwr:

      's Donna to you and Wallis.

You are doing the absolute best that you can for her and she loves you.

From outside I can see that you are taking care of her so well and making her as comfortable as possible and treating each issue in place, I know it feels so difficult when it is happening to you and you feel all messed up inside about it all.

It's heartbreaking to know what you are going through, we're here for you

Donna please know that my thoughts are with you Bubba and Wallis. There are not adequate words to express how sorry I am that this is going on. I can only imagine your worry. I think Shay said it best, you'll know when it's time.

Wallis is so lucky to have an owner like you who is willing to put so much love an effort into her health issues. A lesser person would have given up long before, and I admire you for sticking with her. No matter what happens, you have given Wallis THE BEST POSSIBLE LIFE A CAVALIER CAN HAVE!

Enjoy your trip and take a breather knowing that Wallis will be throughouly enjoying herself with Judi and the motely crew :D

PS: Just wait till you meet Bella ;) ;)

Donna they do give a signabout this time last year I lost my Rocky I could not let him live in pain
The 1st sign was not wanting to go a walk and not wamtimg to play
The 2nd sign was he stop eating
and the last sign was he kept looking at me and he could not lay down in comfort
you will know when it is time enjoy your trip I am thinking of you and Wallis ----Aileen and the gang (Jazzie---Barney---Sam)

Yep, don't forget the congenital thromobocytopenia -low platelets in Cavs.

Did the vet give you a copy of the blood tests? any chance you can post them? I work in a haematology lab and would have had much more idea what was wrong with my boy if I'd seen his results sooner. You never know it might help I see 600 of these results a day and bone marrow tests.

What ever happens, it is clear that you will do the very best for Wallis. You are a wonderful mum. :l*v:

Donna,

I am only just catching up with posts. I am so very, very sorry that Wallis is so poorly :( She is such a beautiful girl and she knows as we do that her Mamma and Daddy love and adore her and will do the best they can for her. Don't ever doubt yourself.

I will ask my friends to send out healing for her ( will help to alleviate pain ) & send you, Bubba and Wallis positive loving thoughts.

Take care, thinking of you    xxx :flwr:

Donna,
I am so sorry this is happening to your baby. I will keep you in my thoughts and heart. :flwr:

You can never know how much the outpouring of sympathy means to me. We all can talk about any and everything, have differences of opinons, etc., but when it comes down to something like this everyone bands together. That's one of the things that I love about this site; I want to be around to help others too.

I really appreciate the info on the large platelets in Cavaliers. I will most definately get copies of that information to my vet. I've lost my breeders phone number, can't find it on the 'net, and the clinic where I met her won't give me the number. I'd like to chat with her and see if she's had this issue with any of her other dogs. I will try to talk to the vet there tomorrow.

Thanks again. Wallis is looking pretty good right now, a bit of trouble getting up but once she's up she is trotting around and wagging her tail. We'll just see what tomorrow brings.
