I'm going to get a big dry erase board to start listing Wallis's problems so that I can keep up with them and their priority more easily.
Our current first priority is that her platelet count is low. This means that she may not be producing enough platelets, she is "using" them up somehow, or that there is some on-going process that is keeping her from producing them.
We may have an internal bleeding problem, causing the low platelet count. We have to be on the lookout for bruising or her skin turning purple. There may be a problem in her bone marrow. The tumor could be releasing toxic chemicals into her system. She could have an immune deficiency problem.
She is doing okay right now, but that could change at any time.
Right now our priority list is to find the reason for the low platelet count. This can be done by a bone marrow biopsy, putting her on steroids to see if it clears up, and/or going ahead with the ultrasound on her heart, spleen, kidneys, etc. The tumor has moved to low on the list.
We can continue to monitor her as she is, since she appears to be doing okay right now. We can be referred to a specialist to have the bone marrow aspirate done, although it may or may not tell us anything, or we can evaluate her heart, etc. (Sorry if I'm repeating myself)
He said he would rather have the ultrasound done before we remove the tumor on her side that we know is cancer.
If we do nothing at this point and the tumor starts to "act up" - grow larger, become ulcerative - then we may need to face the fact that it is time to give up on her.
Yes, this time I have cried like a baby after I talked to him - to the point that Henry (my bird) started crying along with me.
Our plan at this point to leave things as is, take our trip to Chattanooga this weekend, I will be back the next weekend then we will decide what to do. Hopefully nothing will happen while she is staying with someone else or while Bubba is home with her and I'm out of town.
All this has come after I had decided that I was looking at her as a "worst case scenario" and not looking for the positive. She will wag just the end of her tail when I walk past her. She loves her food. She enjoys going outside. I just have to keep in mind quality vs quantity. I won't let her suffer; I love her too much for that. When her time is up we'll know.
I appreciate more than I can say all of the support I've been getting from everyone here. It means so much to me - you've known me for such a short time, but I feel that you have wrapped your arms around me and taken me in. That means a lot, especially now. Yes, I'll joke and laugh and poke fun at you, but I never mean it in a spiteful way because you all are too important.
I think I'll go cry in the shower.
