Ask the vet to show you some of the range of motion exercises you can do at home, they will help in his overall comfort. We tried just exercise before our surgery and it did help, we only had to do surgery once his hip became permanently dislocated. All the exercises help build up the muscle strength around the joint and can help delay surgery.
Mine also has a luxatting patella but since the hip was out of socket, we had to do that surgery first. His knees are hanging in there and I do think the physical therapy for the hip helped the knee.
