The two times I found ticks on mine I didn't know what they were until I had already pulled them off. I was scratching Shelby's head and thought she had a little scab...scraped it off with my fingernail...and it had legs and was moving :yikes Jake's was already engorged and I used a pair of tweezers getting as close to the skin as I could and pulling straight out. I kept both ticks in a plastic bag for about a week to make sure the dogs didn't have any kind of reaction. I've read now that you should store the tick in alcohol. Here are some articles I found online. Hope they help.

They should just fall off -- Lucy got them when at the beach with my mom and that's what she used. I think it is Frontline that works on ticks...? Problem with tweezing them is it is very easy for the body to break off, the head to stay in and get infected. So you need to be sure the head has come out as well.

We always were told to hold a match to them and they back out but wouldn;t do that on a dog with long hair! :yikes

You can get tick hooks - our vet stocks them. They look like a small crochet hook

To get the tick out, you need to rotate it anti-clockwise - this disengages the mouth parts.

:grnyuk: Never heard of one of those. Now that's a specialty product!

we did the match one once and it worked like a charm. We had a few adults helping out though. The tick came out within a matter of a few seconds. Bob (the dog) looked very relieved, lol. Good luck brid!

I've heard that cover the tick with Vaseline will smother it and cause it to back out. I've never tried it but does anyone else have experience with this method?

I hate ticks. When I see a tick or even think about one I feel like Indiana Jones in that scene where he's going down into the Egyptian tomb and the flood is covered in snakes and all he can say is "I hate snakes..."
