• If you're a past member of the board, but can't recall your password any more, you don't need to set up a new account (unless you wish to). As long as you recall your old login name, you can log in with that user name then select 'forgot password' and the board will email you at your registration email, to let you reset your password.

There are big changes coming in the Irish Kennel Club for some brachycephalic (flat/short-faced breeds). The IKC registrations for puppies from Irish breeders of Pugs, French Bulldogs (Frenchies) and Bulldogs will have all puppies registered as 'not to be bred from' by default. For this endorsement to be lifted (free of charge) by the Irish Kennel Club, the dogs will have to successfully pass a BOAS test, "with a result of 2 or less currently being acceptable." I am guessing (though it's not too hard to see...) that the intent is to nudge breeders towards improving breed health and clubs towards changing breed standards and encourage less extreme muzzles and heads.

BOAS is brachycephalic airway obstruction syndrome, a condition that its widespread in those breeds and requires surgery to address. This is why so many flatter faced breeds, including cavaliers, snore and why cavaliers sometimes get 'reverse sneezing' where they gasp. As cavaliers also can suffer from BOAS it is useful to have a vet or specialist check for this for any dog that seems to have noisy breathing, frequent reverse sneezing, exercise intolerance etc. More info on BOAS at Cavalier Health.

On Sunday Feb 4th the IKC will hold a day long health seminar on BOAS. You can pay at the door cash or card, I'm not sure of the cost! The seminar may be of interest to anyone with cavaliers or other dogs with this condition.

10am; The official Irish Kennel Club signing of the RFG licence in conjunction with the Royal Kennel Club and Cambridge University.

10.15am; Introduction of Ian Finney as Lead Assessor/ Coordinator for the Irish Kennel Club followed by a demonstration of BOAS testing and a discussion on the scoring scheme.

11am; Wenche Charlotte Lagmo (FCI & NKK) to discuss the importance of co-operation between Breeders, Kennel Clubs, Vets, FCI and all stakeholders. Raising awareness for Breeders of their responsibilities regarding the Health of their puppies. The consequences of the Norwegian Court Case for Breeders.

12 Noon; Introduction from the Irish Kennel Club Judges Committee of Judges Education Module 5, presentation of the IKC Breed Specific Instruction for Judges and powerpoint display of the Breedwatch Video.

1.30 pm; Dan O’Neill (Leader of the Vet Compass Programme and Chair of the Brachycephalic Working Group UK) to talk about Breeders Best Practices the future health concerns affecting breeds.

2.30 pm; Presentation by Paul Flynn, Head of Research & Development at Weatherbys Scientific on Canine Genetic Testing.

3.15pm; Discussion on new EU proposals of Animal Welfare and questions and answers across all topics.
