recommended chew toys?

Mine love the Antlers!!

Max and my Sheltie mix love the antlers and they never wear out, while the beasts can chow down on bully sticks in less than an hour, the pieces get small and I am afraid that they will swallow the small pieces. If you try the antlers I suggest getting the larger ones so they can't be swallowed.

Puppy chews are really not for serious chewers -- they are more to allow the small teeth of puppies some gentle chewing as they are teething. I wouldn't buy anything for puppies for a hard chewer (or most dogs over 6 months of age -- but some are definitely gentler!).

Interesting thread with lots of chew treat suggestions for me to try!

I like beef sinew for longer lasting treats than bully sticks but bully sticks and dried tripe are the favourites here. They also like rawhide chips which last a long time. Hooves interest them sometimes. Have never tried antlers.

I agree with the puppy chews... she is too tough a chewer for those

Gracie gets a LOT of exercise so that is sure not the issue. A least 3-4 good walks a day and also playtime and training time twice day. Even on days with more exercise.... she is a TOUGH chewer. I am leaning toward the antlers... I know I can get those here. Not sure as sure about the beef sinew. May be called something else here.

As another warning, neighbor's vet said he had another dog this week with sharp bits of Nylabone removed from their gut. Has now decided that he is warning his patients about them. Gave her a flyer when she checked out her dog after he had minor surgery. Wonder if they changed their formula for their hard nylon chews??

Karlin - I don't know if that is what we get here. Merrick makes a dried beef achilles heel tendon http://www.merrickpetcare.com/store/treats_detail.php?c=21&s=29050 and Sophie can go thru them as quickly (or quicker) as the bully sticks. What you get in Ireland/UK might be different.

The antlers are the only thing that slow Sophie down. I used to buy the ones that are more her size: 6"- 7" long and less than an inch thick. BUT, when they are chewed down to three inches long, I take them away so that she won't accidentally choke on it. They're quite clean, too, as they don't get gooey and soft.

While our son and DIL were living with us, I got their 60-lb puppy an appropriate size antler and Sophie lurves it. She prefers it to the smaller ones, so I'll start buying the "big girl" antlers.

Local indy pet supply shop owner cautioned me to only let my dog chew on the antler for no more than an hour a day, or the teeth will wear down quickly. Some days Sophie chews hers for more than an hour, but other days it goes ignored. Depends if she needs a good chew-session, I guess.

Wow,, just did a quick "Google" and found this web site http://www.deerantlersforpups.com/ and while scrolling thru their slide show of dogs gnawing on the antlers, there are some cute tri-color Cav photos!

CHEW TESTS! What has been holding up well! And what did not

Okay.... so we have some clear winners passing the Gracie chew tests. The smaller elk antlers and the toys below are clear winners.

The ORKA line of chew toys from Petstages are REALLY holding up to her aggressive chewing....unlike Nylabones which she decimates way too fast. Some of their options are too big, but here are two that worked great. You can remove the little fabric ties if you like.

We cut off the one section with the hole in it and ties.... she loves this the best.

What failed the tests:

Did not last long at all... she had bits of the bones coming off in less than 30 minutes and trying to swallow them.

Anything rubber is useless for us.... she will not even touch it unless it has food on or in it.

Claire has that First Petstages toy you have listed, I got rid of the ties. But, she really isn't nuts about it.......so I stuck with the USA rawhide retriever rolls I mentioned earlier.

Did you get the antlers from that site that only uses US stuff (ipet)? Or did you just try one from Amazon?

Glad you found something that works.

This is a great thread! I cannot wait to try antlers, who would have thought!
Brooklyn is entering her chewing phase and will need some of these things!!
